Penny had her first float a few weeks ago. Like many people, she came
out of the tank room, happy, relaxed and feeling great! She told her
friends about the experience but they had a lot of questions.
Explaining floating can be a difficult thing to do. So she wrote up
everything she remembered and shared it. She shared it with us too!
We have had a lot of people come for their first floats. We know there are many others out there that are undecided about whether or not to give the experience a try. Letting Penny tell you about her experience here seemed to be a great way to show you what to expect here at Nashville Float and Massage.
My first float at Nashville Float and Massage
October 7, 2013
I treated myself on Saturday to a new experience that was most pleasant and rewarding. After living/suffering for about 3 years with FM, I had heard about "floating" and its benefits of stress reduction and help with chronic pain and other disorders like sleeplessness, etc. So I made an appointment for a float (90 minutes) followed by a 60 minute massage and was I ever grateful for the time and money that I invested in myself!
I arrived at Nashville Float and Massage a bit before 11 am on Saturday and read their policies and signed the form. It is a spa that is pleasing to the eye, calm and quite comfortable. Mark and Amy are super easy-going and friendly folks who truly enjoy what they do and love helping other people. Mark took me into the float room which is equiped with an open shower, shampoo, conditioner, and body wash along with thick fluffy towels and wash cloths for you to bathe before and after your float. It is a soothing space with a nice teak wood bench, slippers, and a huge, cuddly terry cloth robe to wrap up in after your float.
Mark carefully went over how to get into the float tank safely as it could be slippery. There are new wax ear plugs which form fit to your ears so you don't have Epsom salt water in them as you float. Along with that is packets of vaseline in case you have an scapes or minor cuts to coat before getting into the tank as saltwater will sting. There is a spray bottle with fresh water and a handtowel on the handle of the tank if you happen to get saltwater in your eye and need to flush it out. You can also use the towel to prop the float tank door open if you get to stuffy inside the tank. The lights are on motion sensors in the room so no need to worry about turning lights on or off and there is a red mini light always on in the shower area for safety or people who prefer a bit of light when they float if they crack the door.
I got into the tank after my shower. It was body temperature so that I couldn't tell where the saltwater solution began and I ended. The solution is like silk on your skin as the salt has been completely dissolved and it holds you, cradles you even, gently in a suspended state. There is no light or sound and it is complete bliss!
I laid back as I would going to bed completely naked and alone with no distractions or cares for 90 minutes. As I closed my eyes, I felt like I was moving but wasn't sure that I really was. It was sort of surreal and awesome. It did get a bit stuffy for me, so I did prop the door up with my towel to get some fresh air in there which made my float better for me. Each person is a bit different. I felt like I was in a safe, cozy womb just being renewed and resting all of me.
My mind wandered and then quieted to a point where I wasn't sure if I was awake, dreaming, sleeping or whatever... It was fantastic to have such peace and relaxation. I was weightless and simply rested in the salt solution as if I were floating in space. No stress on any part of my body or in my mind. When the soft music began playing to signal my float's end, I wasn't sure if it was real or in my head and I had to sit up and take out my ear plugs and really listen hard to be sure it was real! I carefully got out feeling weightless and light in body and soul and mind. Took a nice warm shower rinsing all the salt solution off and dried off with a giant fluffy towel. Then, I wrapped up in my big cozy robe to go have my massage.
Amy is very concerned with meeting the needs of her clients before, during and after massage. She carefully discussed what my focus areas were and what I hoped to achieve from my massage. We talked about my health issues and wellness. The room was beautifully decorated with a plush shaggy rug that made my feet smile as I slipped off my slippers to climb on the table. The table is draped with two crisp but soft sheets and a nice velux blanket for warmth. Amy was very respectful of my modesty and needs throughout the massage. I had some water before and after as hydration is important to flush toxins and hydrate the body.
Never have I felt so completely relaxed and content as I did after my float and massage. I was remarkably pain free and relaxed with no tension or knots in my body or muscles. I was really in a state of bliss and calm after my float that was further enhanced by the massage after.
I came home and slept like I have not since I was a baby, I am sure! It was a calm, deep, peaceful slumber with no waking in the night, and I awoke feeling wonderfully refreshed and alive. Renewal at its best!!!
Floating is definitely going to become a part of my regular life as I plan to utilize their membership options which you can see on the Nashville Float and Massage website http://www.nashvillefloatandmassage.com/
