3 Reasons To Make Floating Alone Part of Your Time Together

Going solo on Valentine’s Day?  A float tank is the perfect self-date.  You are in an ideal environment for introspection.   A perfect opportunity to get to know you a little better.

But with Valentines weekend approaching and our appointments are filling up, one has to question as to why, on a weekend about love and connectedness with another person, would a couple  spend 90 minutes of that time alone in the dark?

It’s a reasonable question.  With every commercial showing love portrayed between inseparable couples, people who haven’t experience floating at all (or more than once or twice) may not understand the draw.

Once you get past the first 3-4 floats, your body adjusts to the new environment of the tank and you can experience much more of the deeper benefits, many of which can make an evening with your beloved extremely enjoyable.

Floating helps us respond instead of react to what our beloved has to say.

In the last week I have had two different floaters tell me how floating has changed their relationships.  One is finding a deeper connection with their spouse.  The other described difficult communication with an ex-spouse changing into a comfortable flow that is causing her less stress.

According to research of neuroendocrinologist John Turner and Psychologist Thomas Fine, floating “alters the set-point in endocrine homeostatic mechanism so that the individual would be experiencing a lower adrenal activation state”

In English, floating increases your tolerance to stress. 

We aren’t so quick to be angered by the usual irritants.  We "don't sweat the small stuff".  We see the big picture a bit clearer and let some things roll off our back while focusing on the good.

You become a kinder, gentler you. 

Your senses are heightened when you come out of the tank.

During your time in the tank, the way you experience the world is disrupted.  For the most part, our senses are on autopilot every day.  We often walk through our day without any real awareness of our actions or thoughts.

When we eat, we’re often not thinking about the taste.  Instead we’re focusing on conversation with a co-worker or distracted thinking about a problem that needs to be solved.  The input is automated.

But the tank interrupts these automated processes and it is within the act of deautomatization that allows us to see things with a new intensity and a new focused attention. 

When you come out of the float room colors are brighter.  The chocolate in the lobby is sweeter.  Your beloved’s perfume is richer and heady.  Your take notice as the flavors of your meal seem more intense .  It can make an already pleasurable evening even more so!

Endorphines makes you happy. 

Let’s face it, we all live in a chronic stress state of some sort.  But floating has a very powerful relaxation response. 

Floating can cause a natural secretion of endorphins which is your body’s very own natural narcotic.  In one study, puppies, chicks and young guinea pigs were separated from their mothers and given does of endorphins.  With that dose, they stopped crying and ceased to experience stress. 

Endorphins help to reduce pain and, like other opiates, they create a sense of euphoria.  Coming out of the tank, you just feel good!  Daily aches and pains have disappeared, the stress and overwhelm that was preventing you from focusing on the person you are with has slipped away. 

When your float is over and you're reunited, you're in the perfect state of mind for a night full of adventure and romance.
